CLUE MYSTERY MAGAZINE December 1940

Mystery and detective pulps were a dime a dozen on the racks, but the offbeat and delightful CLUE stood out from the rest with an eccentric cast of characters and a remarkable conceit: as the reader came back month after month, it would emerge that the cover story of each issue was in fact a fragment of one large, encompassing murder mystery! Lynn Landis (a pseudonym for authors Jonathan Lynn and John Landis) stretched out the story over a span of nine issues until it finally reached its ultimate conclusion in the July 1941 issue. After that, the magazine became a standard detective anthology which ran through 1946. Andrade’s artwork for the Lynn Landis stories featured a different character from the serialized mystery on each cover, and have become the most highly sought after by collectors of this title.
