Liz Martin "Adversaries"

ARTIST BIO - LIZ MARTIN (@nerdlepointer)

Liz Martin is an art director based in Arlington, VA. After earning a degree in American Studies from Wesleyan University — which solidified her interest in pop culture and mythmaking (if not a clear vocation) — she completed a second degree at the Corcoran School of Art + Design and launched a career in graphic design.

With a day job that keeps her firmly rooted in the digital realm, she prefers to spend her off hours making work that is distinctly and deliberately offline. In 2016, she picked up a hoop and decided to learn a few new embroidery stitches for fun. Since then, she’s completed dozens of portraits and landscapes, contributed to a variety of exhibitions, and received several recognitions for her work.

Star Trek has existed in the background of her life for as long as she can remember. It’s a comforting presence, full of familiar faces and big questions asked under dramatic lighting with occasionally unconvincing special effects. Creating this series of embroidered portraits became a way of spending time with some bickering old friends — some actual enemies, some ideological foils, and some just frustrating space coworkers.
