ARTIST STATEMENT - BY NICK

For my seventh solo online show with Gallery 1988, Inner Worlds, I use characters from The Simpsons to explore the unseen landscape of the mind. Removed from Springfield and placed deep within a burning forest, these familiar figures become vessels for introspection rather than humor. The forest acts as a metaphor for the subconscious - dense, layered, and difficult to navigate. While fire represents anxiety, transformation, and revelation. It destroys, but it also illuminates.

Birds move through the smoke as witnesses and messengers, symbols of awareness and the possibility of clarity amid chaos. By isolating each character in this elemental setting, I strip away their scripted identities and focus on their inner states. The tension between cartoon iconography and painterly realism creates space for vulnerability. Inner Worlds invites viewers to look beyond what they recognise and consider the quiet act of facing oneself.
